Bridge Deck replacment - I-75 GA

LCW completed a $4,098,887.00 roadway and bridge rehabilitation project on I-75 in Macon, GA. The first phase of the project included four bridges that were in close proximity with one another. The majority of work consisted of replacing the top 1/2 of bridge deck with a new concrete overlay, replacing the bridges' approach slabs, replacing the transition sections of roadway pavement, reconstructing the asphalt shoulders, guardrail replacement, and bridge painting. The high volume of interstate traffic once again prompted GA DOT to allow only weekends to perform all major work operations.

The second phase of the project consisted of a partial bridge deck replacement on the Northbound and Southbound directions of I-75 over Oglethorpe Street in downtown Macon, GA. The corresponding approach slabs were also replaced along with reconstruction to the outside shoulders. The bridge deck was replaced by utilizing a composite steel grid deck with precast concrete slabs. LCW precast the prefabricated steel decking in our Alpharetta yard months prior to deck panel installations. After the 24-hour compressive strength of 3500 psi for the cast in place portion over the beams was achieved the roadway lane closures were removed by 5 am each Monday morning in order to avoid the $25,000.00 per day potential liquidated damages. After the panels were installed and closure pours were completed, the deck surface was ground 1/4" in order to present a uniform bridge deck surface. A co-polymer overlay was then applied to the entire bridge deck. The 3/8" thick bridge deck coating provided complete waterproofing as well as providing a non-skid surface that withstands continuous heavy traffic and extreme changes in weather conditions.

The composite steel grid deck with precast concrete slab is a tremendous final product that offers a great solution to reducing traffic delays during bridge deck replacements. LCW is very proud to be associated with such an innovative product and are impressed with its capabilities. This project was only the second of three in which GA DOT has replaced bridge decks on interstate highways with the composite steel precast panel design. LCW has had the privilege of securing all three GA DOT contracts. The Company began construction of the third contract, worth $4,788,887.00, in October 2007. They look forward to building similarly designed projects in the near future.
